That clock is a pizza

That clock is a pizza,
Twelve slices round,
Or an onion bagel,
All toasty and browned,
Now it’s a pie filled
With fruit or with meat,
What time is lunch coming?
I’m dying to eat!

another day, another loss, another half-hearted attempt at optimism

baby be brave
be bold and be strong
it’s not as bad as you think
sometimes the suffering
seems so severe
it sends you right to the brink
but try not to tumble
or turn toward the hurt
time can repair how you ail
whatever your woes are
it could be worse
it’s not like your onion bagel’s stale

the band

this unbroken ring shows all
that our union shall not fall,
endless in its circled line,
our two separate lives combine
onion taste we both adore,
mark our love forevermore

well hello there

skin smooth and strokeable
lust inducing perfume
curves from here to my grandchildren

today

today the sun’s a bagel
it toasts as it descends
golden yellow
burning orange
fire coil red and then
i look away
i close my eyes
and yet i see it still
but what was once the breaded ring
has now become the hole
and in my mind
the sky is full
of onion flavored dough

i’ll savor every moment,
for this vision soon must go

work in progress

half-baked
misshaped
sticky onion mess
doesn’t look like anything
you’d ever serve
your guests

patience
progress
perfection comes with time
what now appears substandard
will in moments
be sublime

Soon

Soon is slippery
It’s well-oiled dough
It may rise fast
Or take ages to grow

Soon is layered
Though tasty at first
The bigger your bite
The greater your thirst

Soon is deceptive
A hole baked in bread
The promise of fullness
That’s empty instead

Soon is crooked
Like my furrowed brow
Though I’ll see you soon,
I miss you right now

Flavor Saver

They say my beard’s a flavor saver,
Which is fine with me,
It catches fallen scraps of food,
For the world to see;
But I don’t care if people laugh,
Hardy har hee hee,
‘Cause I still taste my onion bagel,
Well past half past three.

Four

For four years now my bagel’s been the best I’ve ever had,
She’s nourished me through sick and health, through times both good and bad

Sometimes her skin gets toasty brown, but usually it’s pale,
It’s soft and smooth and appetizing, anything but stale

Her onions can be spicy, and they also can be sweet,
But any way you slice them, they’re the kind I like to eat

Our past four years have flown by faster than a toaster’s ding,
Still I can’t wait to get a taste of what our next ones bring

Tanka #1

ears have heard no ding
nostrils have whiffed no onion
yet i know it’s time
kitchenward my clock takes me
i sense my bagel is done
