single serving cream cheese container

you know you got it goin’ on
everything i want
and need in one
conveniently pocketable package

i long to touch you
to feel your cool against my warm
fingertips taking hold
lifting lustfully on your waiting lid

and now it is time to spread
my blade begins
you are smooth
and you are generous but only at first

for midway through my onion bagel’s
second half you empty
leaving me — and the promise you made —
forever unfulfilled

Observing the Slow-Motion Fall of a Bagel Into a Pool of Milk

rotating, arcing
against a void, a blankness
a wall
its shiny skin
reflecting light
from a bulb
bending it, turning it
now it is soft
now it is still soft
and now
it is harsher
that bulb must be
a thousand watts
of hot
white
white

and now it is gone

and the light brown circle
now oval
now circle again
is about
to reach
the surface
it is a circle
it is an oval
and we hold
our breath
in anticipation

splash!

curving walls
of white
snake up
snake down
the ring
tosses
tilts
and tosses
some more

but now
it rests
it floats
and a thousand tiny ripples
run out from it
run away from it

they run
until they are gone
forever
like so many
onion-soaked
dreams
we once had

Religious Intolerance

The day Monsignor switched
the Eucharist
out for mini onion Bagel Bites®

Was the day
they sent him
to another parish

And a dark day
for the Church
indeed

a bitter bagel to swallow

i wished sincerely
but i fell beneath the stars
i fought for freedom
but i wound up behind bars
i loved completely
but i never was loved back
i planted flowers
but the petals all turned black
i welcomed warmly
but they kicked me to the cold
i cheered the youth on
but they told me i was old
i steered steadfastly
but it only made me carsick
i ordered onion
but i ended up with garlic

Green Onion Bagel (III)

I remember
that day that
I finally
heard the words
Grandson,
I believe
you are old enough
to help

Beaming
at the boiling
water below,
I imagined bragging
and boasting
the other boys
would be
so impressed

But when I
grabbed that
golden ring,
offered it for inspection
I only heard
No! Oh no!
That one isn’t
ready yet

And I knew
neither was I
