new! - "boiling emotion" search story

-
the search for life's meaning can take many shapes - in this case, it's a ring.

a brief history of lies

the moon is made of cheese
the sun’s a bowl of chili
why are you all laughing?
i’m not being silly

the stars are sugar lumps
the milky way is candy
i’m not even joking
as sure as my name’s andy

pluto’s made of dog treats
mars is one big cherry
saturn’s ringed by onion bagels
or my face isn’t hairy

missing you

thumbnails to fingertips, scrape til it burns
digits twitch hungrily, yearning to hold
cds or tuna cans, small plastic bowls
something worth cradling, holey or no

closing my eyelids tight, nostrils flared wide
scents i can’t live without, glide through my head
hot crunchy cracking crust, oniony dough
make me feel whole again, though just for now

today

today the sun’s a bagel
it toasts as it descends
golden yellow
burning orange
fire coil red and then
i look away
i close my eyes
and yet i see it still
but what was once the breaded ring
has now become the hole
and in my mind
the sky is full
of onion flavored dough

i’ll savor every moment,
for this vision soon must go

no vacancy

opening the drawer to find
nothing
but a bible-shaped absence
of dust,
i consider commandment
number 8

though not exactly eye for eye,
i offer
my only onion bagel meal,
sacrificing
my fullness for that of this
motel room desk

No rest for the yeasty

No rest for the yeasty:
mixed up,
beaten,
and left alone in the dark

They still expect you
to rise,
right on cue,
as if nothing ever happened

Did onion bring those tears to their eyes?
Or guilt?

Overdoing It

In case you wonder why this morning finds me with a frown,
And why I grab my temples like some throbbing weighted crown,
The answer is as clear as my butt cheeks are through this gown:
I had too many onion bagels last night on the town.

man crushed to death
by giant bin of onion bagels

it’s how he’d always hoped he’d go,

lox-flavored schmear

little fishy finning through a pool of creamy cheese
for all he knows, this carton stretches outward to the seas
i’ll snare him and i’ll spread him on the onion bagel shore
until that floppy flipper flaps his fishy fins no more

one

does one small fib mean i cannot
still be an honest man?
if i skip just one football game
am i not still a fan?
might one psychotic passing thought
mean i’m no longer sane?
can one stray dried-up onion flake
make one’s bagel not plain?

am pm

stinky
smelly
breakfast bite

lingers
with me
through the night

scented
snores reach
such extremes

onion
bagels
fill my dreams
